ASIS Releases New Private Security Auditing Standards

  A summa cum laude graduate of Rosemont College, Emblez Longoria has served as the senior security consultant for the Basking Ridge, New Jersey, offices of Verizon Communications for more than 15 years. In August 2019, ASIS rolled out a new set of standards, “Conformity Assessment and Auditing Management Systems for Quality of Private Security Company Operations.” This protocol is geared primarily toward those who oversee and audit the activity of private security companies, as well as professionals who operate in that space. These security personnel are tasked with protecting clients in many military, diplomatic, and relief operations.

These new standards will mostly be used by oversight groups as a baseline metric to evaluate private security entities. They have been created as a guidepost to ensure that private security companies and professionals are operating within the bounds of the law, acting in accordance with established best practices, and taking steps to ensure that human rights are not violated in the course of their work.

A Look at ASIS International’s Certification Offerings

For over 15 years, Emblez Longoria has served as a senior security consultant for Verizon Communications in New Jersey. Over the course of his career, Emblez Longoria has earned several security certifications, including the Physical Security Professional and Certified Protection Professional certifications from ASIS International. He also served on the group’s Professional Certification Board.

Dedicated to advancing security worldwide, ASIS International offers four certification programs for professionals working in the security industry. Earning an ASIS credential validates a professional’s security management expertise and can lead to career advancement and increased earnings.

The Certified Protection Professional (CPP) designation is recognized as the gold standard certification in the security industry. Earning a CPP requires that applicants demonstrate knowledge in all areas of security management. Applicants are also required to have several years of security experience, including a minimum of three years in a leadership role.

ASIS International’s other three designations are the Physical Security Professional (PSP), Professional Certified Investigator (PCI), and Associate Protection Professional (APP) certifications. PSP is for professionals with experience in physical security assessment and application, PCI is for investigators experienced with case management and evidence collection, and APP is designed for early-career security managers.

Building a Strong Tutoring Relationship

Helping students as a tutor can be a rewarding opportunity. In order to achieve success in this area, it helps to build a good relationship, following these three strategies:

1. Help Students Relax
Encourage them to talk by being friendly, asking questions, and listening carefully. Avoid showing any impatience or other negative emotions in your body language when they struggle to learn a concept. When you respect their efforts, even if they make a mistake, they will learn to trust you.

2. Make Learning Fun
You can include related interesting facts or make humorous quips as you go through the material. The more engaged students become, the better they will learn.

3. Encourage Independence
When students struggle, you may be tempted to give them the answers, but instead help them work through the problem. You can rephrase questions to give them a different perspective. They need to see you as a trusted aid in their learning process rather than as the source of answers. Then, they will gain valuable learning skills for continuing their studies.

ASIS International Announces ISSA Event Partnership

In February 2017, ASIS International announced that it would host a joint event with the Information Systems Security Association (ISSA), which provides resources to information security professionals.

Held September 25-28 in Dallas, Texas, ASIS International’s 63rd Annual Seminar and Exhibits, also referred to as ASIS 2017, will be the first of the events to see full integration of ISSA facets incorporated.

ISSA has developed a pair of information security tracks to provide additional education, plus it will highlight a number of cyber-security solutions during the event. Furthermore, ISSA will play host to social and organizational meetings, providing information security professionals with the opportunity to network as they learn.

An Introduction to the ASIS International PSP Credential

Over the course of his career, Emblez Longoria has earned several important industry certifications, including the ASIS International physical security professional (PSP) certification.

Individuals in possession of the internationally recognized ASIS International PSP credential have completed coursework in various areas of physical threat assessment and risk analysis, including work on integrated physical security systems. To qualify for PSP education, security professionals must possess an undergraduate degree and four years of security experience, or a high school diploma or GED combined with six years of work experience.

The PSP exam challenges security professionals to answer more than 100 multiple choice questions spread across three distinct aspects of physical security. Questions take into account basic security knowledge, as well as the ways in which this knowledge can be applied to on-the-job scenarios. The Certified Protection Professional Program

Highly trained and experienced in safeguarding corporate assets, Emblez Longoria serves Verizon Communications as a senior security consultant. Emblez Longoria also contributes his expertise to ASIS International, where he has written content for their Certified Protection Professional (CPP) program.

Qualifications for this internationally-recognized credential include nine years of experience in supervisory or independent decision-making roles. Holding a college degree reduces the job-time requirement to seven years. The CPP is considered crucial to finding individuals who are qualified for executive-level positions.

The examination has 200 multiple-choice questions in eight subject areas; an additional 25 non-scored pretest questions may also be added. The test will soon be reorganized into seven domains. Some of the new categories are: security principles and practices, business applications, investigations, personal and physical security, and crisis management.

Holders of the CPP must receive new training in order to stay current. Every three years, they must recertify in subjects ranging from volunteer work and public service to publications and continuing education.

The Executive Protection Institute

Emblez Longoria has years of experience in the field of professional security backed by formal training in specialized schools. One of the schools Emblez Longoria attended is the Executive Protection Institute, where he obtained his PPS (Personal Protection Specialist) certification.

The Executive Protection Institute (EPI) is headquartered in Manhattan, New York, and was founded in 1978 by Dr. Richard W. Kobetz. EPI offers programs that are mostly conducted in Winchester, Virginia. Dr. Richard W. Kobetz developed a training program for protecting private and public executives that is highly respected in the industry.

Since its inception, the institute has trained over a thousand men and women who have protected VIPs all over the world. The institute has also trained military personnel who protect top military commanders. Graduates of the program are currently protecting important leaders in some of the world’s most volatile areas.
